A country needs money to run
Trade policy helps it have fun
By earning some money
Taxing steel, cars, and honey
Yet consumers still pay for each one.
You pay more for each little thing
Air mail is required to bring
If you want avocados
(Hi, guac aficionados!)
Please cough up additional bling.
Taxes have multiple names
They differ, with varying aims
Whether large or quite small
You pay for it all
No matter what government claims.
Tariffs charge money for goods
Imported from all foreign ‘hoods
They restrict free trade, sure
Foreign imports cost more
Than the ones made in your neck o’ the woods.
A tariff sets particular rates
For types of goods — carpets or plates —
Brought here from abroad
(think Europe — not Cape Cod)
A percentage imposed by the States.
Customs duties are taxes galore
On goods brought from all foreign shores
The tax it will vary
From little to scary
Based on how many items you score.
No matter what presidents do
Foreign countries they’re trying to screw
These taxes you see
(I’m sure we agree)
They all just get passed on to you.
